Food That’s Good For Your Teeth
Posted on 02/16/2016

As Walnut Creek dentists, we are always thinking of ways to help our patients maintain excellent oral health. We want your healthy smile to extend far outside of our office, and we want it to last a lifetime. Some of the best ways you can maintain a healthy smile are:

  • Brushing and flossing twice per day, every day
  • Visiting your cosmetic dentist in Walnut Creek, CA twice a year at minimum
  • Consuming food and drinks that are good for your teeth

While many patients are well aware that they should brush, floss and receive semi-annual teeth cleanings, they are not as aware of the effects that certain foods have on their smiles. We have compiled a list of foods that we encourage our patients to eat, as they each pose unique benefits to your oral health.

  • milkDairy products: Dairy products such as cheese and milk contain high levels of calcium, which is a mineral that helps build strong bones, including your teeth and jawbone. Calcium also protects against periodontal disease.

  • Crunchy vegetables: Firm vegetables contain high water content, and water is great for increasing the amount of saliva and therefore scrubbing the surfaces of your teeth. This extra scrub helps to keep your teeth white.

  • Oranges: Oranges contain a decent amount of vitamin C, which strengthens blood vessels and tissue. This helps keep your gums healthy and also slows gingivitis to a halt.

  • Black and green tea: Black and green teas contain polyphenols. Polyphenols are useful in the prevention of plaque and bacteria, thereby helping prevent cavities and periodontal disease. sushi
  • Sugarless gum: Sugarless gum is also good for saliva production, which, as mentioned earlier, helps to scrub the surfaces of your teeth and reduce acid.
  • Salmon, tuna or other fatty fish: These types of fish are abundant with vitamin D. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium.
