Dental crowns and bridges have been revolutionized by modern technology, and we at Fitzgerald Dentistry have embraced these changes. Read more to learn about what dental crowns and bridges are, and how we use CEREC technology to provide you with the highest caliber crowns and bridges.

Dental Crowns

When a tooth gets a cavity, it will form a hole, which is typically treated with a dental filing material. However, if the missing part of the tooth includes a cusp or is otherwise very large, then a dental crown will be necessary. A dental crown will restore the tooth that is either damaged or missing, allowing it to have proper form and function.

Bridges

A dental bridge can replace more than one missing tooth, and does so by bridging the gap where one or more teeth are missing. Dental bridges are incredibly convincing, as they look and feel just like normal teeth.

A dental bridge consists of two or more crowns on either side of the missing tooth/teeth, with the one or more false teeth in between those teeth.

Types of Bridges

In order to accommodate your specific needs, we utilize a few different kinds of dental bridges in our office –

  • Traditional bridges: These are the most common type of bridges, and involve creating a crown for the tooth on either side of the missing tooth, using a false tooth in between.
  • Cantilever bridges: These are used when there is not a tooth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. Due to the fact that the missing tooth or teeth only have support for a bridge on one side, these bridges will instead use two adjacent crowned teeth on the one side of the false tooth to support bridgework.
  • Maryland bridges: These bridges are typically used when there happen to be missing front teeth. Instead of utilizing crowns for support, our Walnut Creek dentists will use metal or porcelain wings on each side of the bridge and bond them to the surrounding teeth.

The Fabrication Process

Historically, the fabrication of crowns and bridges were processes that required messy impressions, temporary crowns or bridges, multiple appointments and metal-based restorations. We, however, are able to fabricate Walnut Creek dental crowns and bridges in the office, the same day that the need for it is identified. This process is accomplished with CEREC, which utilizes sophisticated computer imaging, computer aided design, and computer milling of modern tooth-like ceramic materials.
